GREEN URBAN DESIGN AND PLANNING

Quarry FallsQuarry Falls

Client: Sudberry Properties
Urban Design: Carrier Johnson
Landscape Design: Wallace Roberts & Todd

By reclaiming land drastically altered by decades of sand and gravel mining, this plan will add 4,000 new residential units to one of three designated “urban” areas in the City of San Diego. A decrease in natural resource use will be achieved through a commitment to LEED® standards for all public buildings, and the use of appliances and fixtures that have met the standards of the U.S. Government’s EnergyStar and WaterSense programs. Outside, green features include a bioswale along the west edge of the central park that will naturally treat and detain most of the stormwater from the site.  Quarry Falls has achieved a stage 1 Gold rating as a LEED-ND pilot project.

Eastern-Urban-CenterEastern Urban Center

Client: McMillin Land Development
Urban Design: RTKL Architects and Cinti Land Planning
Landscape Design: Wallace Roberts & Todd

Built around a framework of lively parks and walkable streetscape spaces, this development will make efficient use of dwindling land resources in the Southern California city of Chula Vista.  The design team, with help from the Gas Technology Institute and the Sustainable Communities Initiative, has taken a whole-systems approach to evaluating energy and water use and is studying ways to combine or eliminate infrastructure systems. Submitted for certification as a LEED-ND® pilot project.

Ali-Center-Plaza-Copyright-Broken-Sidewalk-blogMuhammad Ali Center

Client: PARC of Louisville, Kentucky / Ali Center
Building Design: Beyer Blinder Belle Architects
Landscape Design: EDAW, Inc.

The centerpiece of a redevelopment plan along the banks of the Ohio River in Ali’s hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, this new museum will serve as a place to tell Ali’s extraordinary story and to celebrate his deeply rooted values of peace, social responsibility and selfrespect. Built atop the museum’s parking structure, this new public space features a grand seating terrace made from locally quarried limestone and a series of fountains that connect quieter garden spaces with a large public plaza below.

Census-BureauU.S. Census Bureau Headquarters

Client: United States General Services Administration
Building Design: SOM, Skanska USA Building
Landscape Design: EDAW, Inc.

This LEED® Silver project for the 5,000 civil servants of the U.S. Census Bureau features a “Natural Garden” that extends eastward from the forested stream valley to the west. A “Census Walk” at the building’s center derives its shape from graphs depicting the growing U.S. population. The “Agricultural Gardens” on the east side of the building recall the agrarian use of the land prior to its development in the 1960’s, and showcases progressive stormwater management and irrigation techniques.

River-GardenSan Diego River Garden

Client: Sudberry Properties
Site Design and Planning: Wallace Roberts & Todd, Inc.

For years, urban development along the San Diego River has largely ignored the beautiful riparian corridor and wetlands that supported the early settlement of the City of San Diego. This park invites residents back to the river’s edge, integrates natural and human systems into its design, and aims to inspire positive environmental change. Activities on site will include ecological education, gardening, picnicking, water and adventure play, community events, and careful observation of birds and other wildlife.

Green-VillageGreen Village

Client: Knoeffler Enterprises
Building and Urban Design: MW Steele Architects
Landscape Concepts: Wallace Roberts & Todd, Inc.

In this conceptual design of this project, the use of advanced technology will be central to achieving the goals of creating a development that is ‘water neutral’ and a net producer of energy.  A membrane bioreactor will filter, recycle and reuse all of the wastewater generated on-site and photovoltaic panels and microwind generators will produce electricity for residents and businesses. The building roofs will feature planters where residents can grow fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers with water recycled from within the building.

Chesapeake-BeachThe Chesapeake Beach Veterans’ Memorial Park

Client: City of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland

The Chesapeake Beach Veterans’ Park uses the basic symbols of our flag as basis for its design.  The American flag is raised above a large star and set before the backdrop of a fountain wall that honors those servicemen who gave their lives in service to our country.  The stripes of Old Glory are represented in a series of low seating walls on a grass surface, making the entire park available as an amphitheater for ceremonies and town gatherings.  The park and United States flag flying high above it are both visible from the top of the hill on Chesapeake Beach Road leading into town and serve as a gateway to the community and continue to be sources of civic pride for the citizens of Chesapeake Beach.

Ferry-Beach-Ecology-SchoolFerry Beach Ecology School Center

Client: Ferry Beach Ecology School

This office and education space is a great example of a grass-roots green building effort, built with the help of local vocational students and lots of volunteer labor. Interpretive displays on the walls inside showcase pieces of the building materials to explain the Center’s green techniques and technologies. The landscape outside incorporates a “geology wall”, a solar panel, rain barrels and lots of native plants; all of which are used in hands-on green building and ecology lessons for both children and adults.
