TNS Framework one-page summaryIn order to create a sustainable society, we need a clear, structured and complete understanding of the challenges we face.

The Natural Step Framework is the primary tool we use in our work to plan and implement strategic sustainability efforts.  The TNS Framework (academically known as the FSSD) has helped hundreds of organizations around the world create long lasting and transformative change. It is openly published and free for all to use. It is constantly being used, tested, refined and developed.

The Framework’s “ABCD” process helps us to answer for simple and effective questions from a strategic sustainability perspective:

  • (A) What are we talking about?
  • (B) What do we have?
  • (C) What do we want?
  • (D) How will we make it happen?

The rest of the Framework provides the background information participants need for answering these questions based on a scientifically-derived understanding of the four big ways that we’re continually mucking up our communities and the planet as a whole.

Basically, to improve our quality of life over the long term, we’ve got to figure out how to continually (4) eliminate negative social barriers, (3) become positive participants in our local and global ecosystems, and (2+1) not release more pollutants into the air, water and soil. (And do these things all at once.)

A simple challenge.  Right?

No.  Of course not.  The challenge of reaching sustainability is incredibly complex.

And that is why The Natural Step Framework is so valuable.

It provides exactly the structure, clarity and depth that we need in order to work on sustainability in a strategic way.
